And that friendship will be there when the love fades away.

And that sometimes, love comes from friendship.

Sometimes it is friendship that strengthens love.

Sometimes you can’t even tell one from the other. One day you wake up and realize that what was once just friendship has turned into love without you knowing how or why or when.

Sometimes you have to let both run their course: love and friendship; friendship and love. Eventually, unconsciously, they might meet halfway—and blend into one.

There is love at...

Dispatches from the Edge by Anderson Cooper.

There is love at first sight in a bookstore, and this is one of them. I almost passed it by. I was walking around Booksale’s many book stacks and happened to sneak a glance at the stack I almost bumped into. And heaven opened up in a chorus of angels, for there it was, Dispatches from the Edge, at the very top of that stack looking a little careworn but still gallant (if books are ever gallant).

I took one look at it, picked it up and paid for it at the counter. No second thoughts. There was no way I was going home without it.

This is Anderson Cooper’s autobiography of sorts, a combination of his life as a child growing up in the Upper East Side and his career as a foreign correspondent for CNN. This guy—along with Nic Robertson and Christiane Amanpour—made me want to become a CNN correspondent. An international field reporter, no less. I want to do what they do, get away from my comfort zone and get myself almost killed for the noblest of reasons: information.

I’ve been looking for this book since forever (read: when it first came out). I grew up watching CNN and Fox News (though I slowly came to diss Fox News for its obvious Republican bias that it’s not trying to hide AT ALL).

I grew up spending New Year’s Day lunch watching CNN: waiting for the ball (and the confetti) to drop at Times Square; bouncing with excitement as the cameras pan across the gathered thousands with their New Year paraphernalia; keeping an ear out for that oh-so-familiar “New York, New York” tune; and listening to Anderson Cooper and his co-anchor Kathy Griffin look back on the year that was and take digs at each other. I liked him immediately. He was a no-nonsense kind of guy, if a little, well, staid. But I thought covering New Years were all he was good for.

And then there was Haiti, with the earthquake that shook its capital and exposed the country’s poverty, inequality and corruption which the world had always ignored. And Anderson Cooper was there, with his cameras and his words, describing the pain and grief behind the rubble. He was there and back again, flying from Port-au-Prince to New York to Port-au-Prince.

And then there was the war in Iraq, and another one in Afghanistan, and the uprisings of the Arab Spring. He was there too, again with his cameras and with his words, talking about death and life—perhaps in that order—and the reason behind the bloodshed. So first impressions definitely don’t last: This guy’s got guts.

And somehow, I wished I was there: He was covering history as it unfolded. I wanted that.

And then there was that famine in Somalia. He was there as well, telling the stories behind every child’s smile, showing the images the world turned its back to: babies in skin and bones, wrapped in frayed blankets; skulls of dead animals on the wayside slowly being buried in the sand; mothers gathering branches of dead trees, pitching them together to form a tent of sticks.

I remember watching those footage one rainy afternoon at home. And I remember being so frustrated, so restless. I kept telling myself that someday I’ll get a job that’ll send me to these places that Anderson Cooper flies off to. And when I do, I’ll help build those damned tent of sticks, I’ll give those babies food, I’ll…

I’ll be Anderson Cooper and tell their stories. Beg the world to know, to understand, and to help.

Maybe I’m a fangirl. Maybe. But I’m not fangirling because of his looks or his voice or whatever. I just want to do what he does. Go to where he goes. Tell the stories that should matter. Beg the world to know, to understand, and to help.

So yeah.

I had to buy the book, his book. I want to understand what drives him to do what he does. I want to see what he sees when he goes to the places that have seen men die without dignity. That book is the bridge from the lens of Anderson Cooper to the eyes of the girl who wants to be like him. How could I not buy it?

Bianca.Creates.Things

Bianca.Creates.Things:
This is my impulse blog, where I post my impulsive decisions and their awesome (disastrous?) outcomes.

Introducing Paper by FiftyThree

We just launched our first product and I could not be more pleased with the result.

Paper is where ideas begin. It’s the easiest and most beautiful way to create on iPad. Capture your ideas as sketches, diagrams, illustrations, notes or drawings and share them across the web. Download “Paper by FiftyThree” free from the App Store. Then buy tools in the in-App store.

What’s special for everyone on Tumblr, is that you can share pages directly from Paper as a post. We noticed that people use Tumblr just like a digital notebook, and now you have a way to create pages. It’s simple and beautiful. Give it a try.

Create on.

This made me long for an iPad. For the first time.

"I’ll go out there and make my mistakes. I’ll stand on the highest mountaintop and go into the deepest caverns. I’ll roam across the world, visit the moon and swim in outer space. I’ll let my imagination run wild and let my spirit soar. Why? Because when my life flashes before my eyes in those final moments, I want to have something worthwhile to watch, with plenty of love and laughter, good times and bad. I don’t want to regret a thing and I plan not to. Remember, it’s not usually the things you do that you regret, it’s the things you don’t do and leave unsaid. Laugh out loud. Cry in the rain. Love with all your heart and soul. Get hurt. Tell the truth. Go crazy. But never forget that you only get one shot. One shot at this day, one shot at this minute. One shot at this age. One shot at life. So make sure your life is one you will enjoy watching in your final moments.”

- Anna Floyd (via kari-shma)

"A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies.
